1st & 2nd Series Recap

Day 1 - Saturday, June 19, 2021 – Series 1st & 2nd Series
Our first running dog #89 FC-AFC Abby’s Physician Of Antioch, "Luke" with owner handler Dan Hurst started the 63rd running of the 2021 National Amateur Retriever Club Championship at 6:59 am!
Our weather started in the 60’s and reached in the upper 70’s. We had a slight breeze throughout the day ranging from 8-11 mph coming from the northwest. All in all, it was a great day to be in the field with our beloved retrievers!

It was announced at the annual meeting the night before gun changes would happen every 25 dogs. Here is when they happened…
1st Gun Change – after dog #112 at 9:41 am with the next running dog #113 coming to the line.
2nd Gun Change – after dog #136 at 12:00 pm with the next running dog #137 coming to the line at 12:23 pm.
3rd Gun Change – after dog #10 at 3:14 pm with the next running dog #11 coming to the line at 3:24 pm. Dog #11 received a no bird so dog #12 was the next running dog to come to the line at 3:25 pm.
4th Gun Change – after dog #29 at 5:30 pm with the next running dog should have been #30 “Mully” but he retired earlier this morning so our next running dog #31 came to the line at 5:34 pm.

Here are the way things turned out for the 1st day…
No Bird / Re-Run (8): 95 – 109 – 126 – 146 – 7 – 11 – 28 – 29  
No Bird and did not get to Re-Run (1): 43
Handles (5): 148 – 1 – 20 – 39 – 40
Pick Up (1): 90
Injury (1): 124
Retired - #30

Our last running dog for the day was #43 that came to the line at 7:16 pm. She had a fly away and the day was called by the judges at 7:27 pm. 104 dogs send from line in this series in, taking 12 hours and 28 minutes which averages to be just over 7 minutes per dog.

Day Two – Sunday, June 20, 2021 – Series 1st & 2nd Series
Our test dog Annie came to the line at 6:30 am for our 2nd day of the 1st & 2nd series. Our first running dog of the day #44 R&A'S Tap Dancer, "Katie" with owner handler Rip Shively start the second day at 7:00 am.

We had 1 gun change after #68 completed its test at 9:35 am and then started back up again with dog #69 at 9:43 am.

Here is how the 2nd day turned out of this series…
No Bird / Re-Runs (4): 56 – 71 – 72 – 79
Re-Run (1): #43 carried over from yesterday.
Pick Up (4): 62 – 75 – 80 – 87

We completed the 2nd day of this series with dog #88 at 11:53 am. We had a total of 4 hours 53 minutes competing dogs with an average of 6.6 minutes per the last 44 dogs.

88. FC-AFC BAYPOINT'S DON'T STOP BELIEVIN', "Journey" BLF, Jeffrey Schuett

Came to the line at 11:47 am

Flyer - Journey ran the face of the guns then curved over and scooped up the bird in the road.

Blind - Two whistles at the road and two more in the middle. Journey then got another two blows after the dip and got the blind.

Retired Gun - Good initial line then he checked down short but then she worked her way deeper and went to the bird.

Pick Up - 87. MEADOW WOODS SIDEKICK, "Buddy" BLM, Dana Hoeper

Came to the line at 11:38 am

Flyer - Buddy arrive at the fall between the bird and the guns. With one loop he moved out to locate his long flyer.

Blind - Good initial line. Taking three whistles to get to the blind. A little off the pin and Buddy cut towards the timber and had to be picked up.

86. AFC LAIRD'S CYNFUL SEASIDE GAMBLE, "Betty" BLF, Chris Parkinson

Came to the line at 11:34 am

Flyer - Betty ran the left side of the road and scooped up the bird.

Blind - Two whistles in the middle section and one in the dip. Betty received two more after the dip and that carried her to the bird.

Retired Gun - Betty went straight to the fall and grabbed her bird.

Re-Run - 79. BOO'S STRAIGHT LINE IS GOOD IDEA, "Torq" BLM, Joel Earls

Flyer - Torq received a short flyer and drove out to the flier fall area. Very tight hunt and a turn to the left and Torq grabbed his bird.

Blind - A couple of whistles up front and in the middle then Torq lined the rest of the blind in five whistles.

Retired Gun - He drove all the way to the fliers area and nicely turned left to the bird. Great mark!

85. FC-AFC JORJA'S TARBABY TEMPEST, "Tempy" BLF, Jake Fredericks

Came to the line at 11:23 am

Flyer - Tempy's initial hunt involved the far side of the road. Her hunt pattern moved her over to the area of the fall and on her bird.

Blind - An early whistle to adjust the line right and two more and Tempy had the bird.

Retired Gun - Very Good.

84. AFC BAYOU TECHE PAINT THE BLACK, "Madduxx" BLM, Jamie Woodson

Came to the line at 11:16 am

Flyer - Madduxx ran the right side of the road and checked out the back side in several spots. He then hunted between the road and pond, getting into the water. He crossed the road and ran towards the guns and got his bird.

Blind - One whistle before the road and one in the middle with a final three blows to get past the dip and Madduxx was on his bird.

Retired Gun - Madduxx went up the middle and turned right then went back to the left and quickly went to his bird.

83. FC-AFC JET BLACK'S SUPERSONIC BOOM, "Sonic" BLM, Judy Powers

Flyer - Short flyer that Sonic drove out to the fall area, then turned left and grabbed the bird. Good Job

Blind - One whistle early in the blind, then Sonic lined the rest of the way to get the bird. Good Job

Retired Gun - He drove hard all the way to the fall area and turned right then to the left and went straight for his bird. Good Job

81. NAFC-FC STEADFAST'S BACHELOR SPECIAL, "Croc" BLM, Monte Wulf

Came to the line at 10:55 am

Flyer - Croc went in front of the gun and looped toward the guns then went back and grabbed the bird in the road.

Blind - Two whistles at the road, then two more in the middle and two last whistles for Croc to get to the blind.

Retired Gun - Croc went straight to the bird.

Pick Up - 80. HIGH MILEAGE PRAIRIE SOCIETY, "Fancy" BLF, David Kress

Came to the line at 10:53 am

Flyer - Fancy went straight to the bird.

Blind - Two whistles early and one in the middle. Fancy had to get picked up on blind.

No Bird - 79. BOO'S STRAIGHT LINE IS GOOD IDEA, "Torq" BLM, Joel Earls

Torq and Joel had a no bird and will go back to the get their re-run.

Re-Run - 72. AFC BAYOU-STAR ALL JAZZED UP, "Ella" BLF, Suzan Caire

Came to the line at 10:40 am

Flyer - Ella straight to the bird.

Blind - One whistle before the road and two more whistles before the dip and then Ella went straight to the blind. 

Retired Gun - Good initial line with minor quartering to get the bird.

78. FC-AFC MIDNIGHT TRAINS TEXAS RANGER, "Deets" BLM, Cade Gentry

 Came to the end 10:46 am

Flyer - Deets went around the flyer and gunners and went right to the bird.

Blind - Four whistles and a check down and Deets has his bird.

Retired Gun - Directly to the bird.

Re-Run - 71. FC-AFC COLONIAL'S HUBBA BUBBA, "Bo" BLM, Michael Coutu

Flyer - Bo had a long flyer across the road. He drove to the fall area and setup a tight hunt under the arc. He eventually expanded it and crossed the to get his bird.

Blind - Two whistles in the middle of the blind and Bo worked his way to the bird.

Retired Gun - Bo drove sightly wide right and then correct himself and curled into the fall area and with a tight hunt he got his bird. Good Job!

77. AFC MEADOW WOODS GIRLS JUST DO IT, "Just" BLF, Judy Despenas

Came to the line at 10:25 am

Flyer - Good Mark!

Blind - Four whistles to keep Just on the line that brought her to the bird.

Retired Gun - On the bird!

76. FC TRULINE'S FIRE IN THE HOLE, "Fire" BLF, Andy Kahn

Came to the line at 10:15 am

Flyer - Fire had a long flyer the crossed the road. She went in front of the guns and checked out the normal fall area. She then moved across the road and worked her way to the bird.

Blind - One whistle on the road with two more coming in the middle portion of the blind. Fire took two more blows after the dip and was on her bird.

Retired Guns - She hunted the shore then went into the he correct field and went up near the tree line. Going right she worked herself back to the bird.

Pick Up - 75. AFC PINEHURST'S RUBY DOO, "Ruby" BLF, James Hurst

Came to the line at 10:12 am

Flyer - With a long flyer Ruby drove deep and angled the road. She checked down back to the Otherside and drove deeper and got the bird.

Blind - With an early whistle, Ruby lined the bird the rest of the way to the end. Very nice blind.

Retired Gun - She drove hard right when she got down to the tree line she went the wrong way. Ruby was handled but then had to be picked up.

74. FC-AFC TALL OAKS RAGS TO RUFUS, "Rufus" BLM, Phil Heye

Came to the line at 10:06 am

Flyer - A little loop and Rufus was on his bird.

Blind - A couple of early whistles to Rufus start, then multiple other ones to get him to the bird.

Retired Gun - Rufus broke down early and that put him in an expanding hunt pattern. He worked his way up the hill and got the bird.

No Bird - 72. AFC BAYOU-STAR ALL JAZZED UP, "Ella" BLF, Suzan Caire

Ella and Suzan had a no bird. They will go back and get their re-run in the 6 spot back.
